Mrirt Rugs

Mrirt rugs are woven in and around the town of Mrirt on the northern edge of the Middle Atlas, a region with one of Morocco's most distinctive weaving traditions. Where the Beni Ourain keeps its geometry sparse and ivory-toned, Mrirt rugs are bolder: hard black and charcoal lines, large abstract diamonds, crosses and comb-like symbols drawn against cream or striking grounds of terracotta, saffron and gray. The result is a rug with real graphic power that still reads handmade.

Mrirt weavers favor high-contrast compositions, and the wool is frequently left naturally colored or dyed in deep, earthy tones. The knotting is dense and the pile medium, giving the rugs a crisp surface that shows off their linework beautifully. Historically, the symbols in Mrirt weaving carried protective meanings for the home — the lozenge (the 'eye' that guards the house), the cross, and the comb motifs you can spot across this collection.
