Mrirt · Handmade in Morocco
Handwoven in the Mrirt tradition of the Middle Atlas, this Moroccan rug makes a strong visual statement through contrast and scale. A dense ivory plush pile rises from a deep black woven ground, creating a composition that reads with clarity from across the room. The oversized abstract forms-irregular rounded projections, vertical cutout lines, and horizontal accents-give the rug a sculptural quality that feels both modern and deeply rooted in Berber design language. The weaver has used the contrast between the ivory pile and the black ground to create a sense of depth that shifts throughout the day. In bright light, the ivory areas catch the light and advance, while the black ground recedes. In softer light, the relationship flips, and the dark areas pull the composition together into a unified field. This interplay keeps the surface alive and changing. Hand-knotted from 100% wool in Morocco, the rug features a dense plush pile with contrasting flatwoven areas that add textural variety. The high-low relief creates a surface that is as engaging underfoot as it is visually. The black perimeter border anchors the composition, framing the central abstract form and giving the rug a defined edge. This rug brings together the graphic boldness of contemporary design with the authenticity of hand-weaving traditions passed down through generations. It works naturally in spaces that need a strong anchor-a living room with minimalist furnishings, a bedroom where the floor carries visual weight, or a studio that values texture and contrast.
