The physical structure of the dance mirrors the tight-knit nature of tribal life. It is always initiated by the men, who gather in a straight, impenetrable line, standing shoulder-to-shoulder. They set the heartbeat of the performance using the allun, a traditional wide frame drum, striking it with a slow, steady, reverberating rhythm.
Soon, they are joined by the women, who form a parallel line directly facing the men. The women stand closely together, linking hands underneath their heavy garments, creating a unified wall of movement. As the drumbeat quickens, the two lines begin a subtle, undulating progression—stepping side to side, advancing and retreating in a hypnotic, fluid wave. It is a physical manifestation of mutual reliance; the men and women move as opposing but perfectly balanced forces.

For the women of tribes like the Aït Khabbash, the performance is an opportunity to don the ahruy—a voluminous, stark white draped garment that symbolizes purity and celebration. Pinned at the shoulders by heavy silver fibulae, the white fabric creates a brilliant contrast against the desert night.
Most distinctively, the women drape their tahruyt—a long, indigo-dyed head covering heavily embroidered with brightly colored motifs and metallic sequins—over their heads, deliberately concealing their faces from the men. This veiling introduces an element of intense mystery to the dance. It diminishes the individuality of the dancer, transforming the line of women into a singular, unified symbol of the tribe’s matriarchal strength.
As they move, the heavy wool tassels of their belts swing in time with the drums, and the sequins on their indigo veils flash in the firelight. It is a sensory overload of sound, color, and kinetic energy.
